Is it safe to dye full head of hair then highlight?

I would like to dye my hair darker, a bit darker then what it is now. Plus add gold highlights. The picture I have of what I want in a hairstyle magazine describes it as "glints of gold against a deep brunette base". Anyways, would it be safe to add highlights after dying my whole head of hair??

Dying your hair darker is easy. However, you can not lighten hair with tint....you have to use bleach. If you go darker first....it's going to take a very high peroxide bleach to lift that color back out to achieve the highlights. You will probably end up frying or melting the hair. The most beneficial way to do this is professionally. In the long run it's cheaper and you will get the desired results. There is more to coloring hair than slapping store bought color on the head. There is a chemistry involved....if you're not sure....always ask a professional.

it is perfectly fine. i do mine and many others that way. make sure after u dye ur hair you completely dry it before doing highlights. they wont take as well. as far as drying out goes, just use a good moisturizer. it will look great.

It is safe to dye your whole hair and then add in highlights because hair dyes don't mess up our skins or anything. Facts is that the more you dye your hair, then the more it dies out/starts to feel like wires. The reason for that is because it dries out your hair, that is why you apply condition because it keeps your hair feeling soft, but the hair is still dead. If you want to dye the whole entire head and then add streaks/highlights, then I recommend you getting it done at the shop, unless you know how to do it yourself. It's just that you will have to dry your hair after dying the whole thing and then highlight it. If you are dying your whole head a very dark color then you will have to put more of the gold dye onto the highlights or leave it in your hair for a longer amount of time. You have to check it every once in a while to see how light the color is though. If you are doing this by yourself then make sure you have some foil paper to separate you highlights from your other hair. Hopefully everything turns out good. Take care and good luck.
